Nad Prahou se v úterý 29. listopadu v 18:00 rozsvítily Klimatické hodiny. Osm metrů vysoké a třicet pět metrů široké digitální ciferníky po boku kyvadla odměřují čas, který zbývá k zamezení nezvratných změn klimatu. Hodiny na Letnou umístil Festival svobody v návaznosti na nedávné výročí 17. listopadu. Podle občanských iniciativ, které Festival svobody zastřešuje, klimatická krize představuje jednu z nejvýraznějších hrozeb pro svobodu, mír a demokracii v ČR. V petici 3 kroky za 3 roky vyzývají poslance a poslankyně, aby otázku klimatu řešili.
Méně než sedm let. Tolik času podle nejnovějších vědeckých výpočtů a konsenzu dělí svět od momentu, kdy dojde k nezvratným změnám klimatu, pokud se výrazně nesníží celosvětová produkce skleníkových plynů. Zbývající čas do oteplení planety o 1,5 °C pro Pražany odpočítává sada osm metrů vysokých a dva metry širokých svítících číslic. Levý “ciferník” ukazuje zbývající roky a dny, pravý odečítá hodiny, minuty a vteřiny.
Praha je prvním evropským městem na východ od Berlína, kde se klimatické hodiny objevily. Nacházejí se například v New Yorku, Římě, Soulu či Glasgow. Instalaci Klimatických hodin
na Letné svým souhlasem podpořil Magistrát Hlavního města Prahy a MČ Praha 7 se záštitou radní Hany Třeštíkové. V provozu budou dva týdny, tedy do 12. prosince. Pak se instalace odstraní a prostranství kolem kyvadla se vrátí do původního stavu.
Za podobou pražských Klimatických hodin stojí studio Multiverse. To dokázalo vytvořit vizuálně silnou instalaci i za cenu co nejnižší ekologické zátěže. Klimatické hodiny na Letné tak mají obdobnou spotřebu elektrické energie, jako jeden domácí sporák.
Bez stabilního klimatu nebude stabilní ani ČR
„Festival svobody si každoročně připomíná odkaz sametové revoluce. O ten je ale nutné se starat průběžně, nejen 17. listopadu. Proto jsme se rozhodli v návaznosti na nedávné 33. výročí vedle kyvadla nainstalovat Klimatické hodiny. Chceme občanům, včetně politiků, nenásilnou, ale přesto velmi silnou formou připomínat, že změny klimatu jsou akutní hrozbou pro budoucnost České republiky, ve které panuje svoboda, mír a demokracie,” říká mluvčí Festivalu svobody Marek Cieslar.
Dodává, že potřebu řešit klimatickou krizi ve společnosti podtrhuje zářijový průzkum agentury STEM/MARK a Institutu 2050. Výrazná většina respondentů v něm uvedla, že klimatická změna už probíhá. Převládal také názor, že za ní stojí člověk a že je potřeba ihned či v následujícím desetiletí udělat zásadní kroky k její nápravě.
„První kroky by se měly uskutečnit již příští rok,” podotýká Cieslar. Vyzýváme proto občany, aby se podepsali pod naši petici 3 kroky za 3 roky. Ta reaguje na potřeby občanské společnosti a dění posledních let a klimatická krize je jedním z nich,” říká Cieslar. Dodává, že cílem je nasbírat minimálně 10 000 podpisů, aby se peticí museli závazně zabývat poslanci a poslankyně petičního výboru Poslanecké sněmovny.
Podporu občanů začali organizátoři akcí zastřešených Festivalem svobody ve velkém sbírat 17. listopadu. Zřídili desítky petičních míst v Praze ale i dalších městech. Jejich seznam a celé znění petice, lze najít na webu Festivalu svobody, odkud je možné si ji také stáhnout, vytisknout, a kde se také nacházejí instrukce, jak podepsanou petici doručit organizátorům.

How much time is left to save the planet? A giant Climate Clock is counting it down in Prague.
The Climate Clock lit up over Prague on Tuesday 29 November at 18:00 CET. Eight meters high and thirty-five meters wide, digital dials alongside a Metronome will measure the time left to prevent irreversible climate changes. The clock will be placed on Letná by the Freedom Festival in connection with November 17th – a Velvet Revolution anniversary. According to the civic initiatives under the umbrella of the Freedom Festival, the climate crisis poses one of the most significant threats to freedom, peace and democracy in the Czech Republic. In their petition 3 steps in 3 years, they call on MPs to address the climate issue.
Less than seven years. That’s how long the world is, according to the latest scientific calculations and consensus, away from seeing irreversible climate change unless global greenhouse gas production is significantly reduced. The remaining time until the planet warms by 1.5 °C will be counted down for the citizens of Prague by a set of eight-meter high and two-meter wide luminous digits. The left-hand „dial“ will show the remaining years and days, while the right-hand one will count down the hours, minutes and seconds.
Prague is the first European city east of Berlin to have a climate clock. They are also found in New York, Rome, Seoul and Glasgow. The installation of the Climate Clock on Letná was supported by the Prague City Hall and the Prague 7 Municipality under the auspices of Councillor Hana Třeštíková. It will be in operation for two weeks – until 12 December. Then the installation will be removed and the area around the metronome will return to its original state.
The Multiverse studio as artists is responsible for the design of the Prague Climate Clock. It managed to create a visually powerful installation at the cost of the lowest possible ecological burden. The Climate Clock at Letná thus consumes the same amount of electricity as a single domestic stove.
Without a stable climate, the Czech Republic won’t be stable either.
„Every year the Freedom Festival commemorates the legacy of the Velvet Revolution. However, this must be taken care of continuously, not only on 17 November. That’s why we decided to install a Climate Clock next to the Metronome in Prague in connection with the recent 33rd anniversary. We want to remind citizens, including politicians, in a non-violent but nevertheless very powerful way that climate change is an acute threat to the future of the Czech Republic, where freedom, peace and democracy reign,“ says Marek Cieslar, spokesperson of the Freedom Festival.
He adds that the need to address the climate crisis in Czech society is underscored by a September survey by STEM/MARK and the 2050 Institute. In it, a significant majority of respondents said climate change is already happening. The prevailing view was also that humans are behind it and that major steps need to be taken immediately or in the next decade to address it.
„The first steps should take place as early as next year,“ Cieslar notes. We therefore call on citizens to sign our petition 3 steps in 3 years. This responds to the needs of civil society and the events of recent years, and the climate crisis is one of them,“ says Cieslar. He adds that the goal is to collect at least 10 000 signatures in order for the petition to be taken up by the members of the Chamber of Deputies‘ petitions committee.
Organizers of the events covered by the Festival of Freedom began collecting support from citizens in large numbers on 17 November. They set up dozens of petition sites in Prague and other cities. A list of them and the full text of the petition can be found on the Freedom Festival website, where it can also be downloaded and printed, and where instructions on how to deliver the signed petition to the organizers can also be found.
